Comic Review for 10/10/05

Young Avengers

What’s it about?

A group of teenagers band together to be heroes in a world without the Avengers. Taking place after Avengers Disassembled, these kids try to fill in where the lack of Avengers has weakened the balance between good and bad.

OK, what’s it really about?

It’s Marvel’s answer to Teen Titans, only good. Teenage versions of the big team book group together to fight crime and bicker amongst themselves.

So, why is it good?

First of all, there is a sense of history, while not being so bogged down in history making it impossible to understand. The characters mesh well together, and allow you to feel for them while keeping them fairly mysterious. And the interactions, with some characters appearing to be familiar, just by their conversations is very well done. So much extra is said about the characters just from how they are interacting with each other. The art is also fantastic. The characters come to life off the page, with distinctive appearances such as Hulkling’s earrings. Plus, the ending to each issue is a great cliffhanger for the next issue. It brings the fun of buying monthly comics to know what is going to happen back.

But I hate everything. Name me something I may not like.

The book is dark. Not just from the art aspect, but the writing has had a dark edge on it. Death and destruction has been the order of the day. Also, there have been some late issues as the series has progressed, with the newest issue taking a little while to come out.

Bottom Line?

Young Avengers is one of the best books being published. Pick it up.
